Punta Arenas

It's not exactly a dream destination. There are some attractions, but it has a seedy side, a mish-mash of architectural styles, and nothing special as far as food goes. But its situation in the middle of the Magellan Strait makes it worth visiting.

The proximity to the Antarctic means you start to meet some people with impressive journeys ahead or behind them: one was hoping to get a job on a US Antarctic research vessel, a Norwegian guy had been part of a three-person crew on a boat sailing from South Africa via the Antarctic, others were planning to try and spend the US$ 5000+ it costs to take a tour or cruise there.
